Steps to Buying a Car Privately in Ontario
- Do a thorough inspection
- Test drive if possible
- If the car is sold “AS IS”, have your mechanic inspect it to see what is needed to pass the safety check
- Obtain the “Used Vehicle Information Package” or UVIP from the MTO- $20.00
- Check the UVIP to verify there no liens. A lien indicates a bank or finance company owns the vehicle-not the seller.
- Check the “Average Wholesale Value” on the UVIP. This is the amount you will be required to pay HST on if you do not have an appraisal.
- If you pay less than this you need an appraisal before you go to transfer the ownership
- Negotiate your best price.
- Make sure the back of the ownership is signed by the seller-Transfer Portion
- Get an MTO appraisal from Southex
- Get the Safety Check completed if it was not done by the seller.
- Go to the MTO and transfer ownership to you.
Make sure you have:
- The signed Transfer Portion of the ownership,
- The safety check
- The appraisal
- Insurance information
