Steps to Buying a Car Privately in Ontario
Do a thorough inspection
Test drive if possible
If the car is sold “AS IS”, have your mechanic inspect it to see what is needed to pass the safety check
Obtain the “Used Vehicle Information Package” or UVIP from the MTO- $20.00
Check the UVIP to verify there no liens. A lien indicates a bank or finance company owns the vehicle-not the seller.
Check the “Average Wholesale Value” on the UVIP. This is the amount you will be required to pay HST on if you do not have an appraisal.
If you pay less than this you need an appraisal before you go to transfer the ownership
Negotiate your best price.
Make sure the back of the ownership is signed by the seller-Transfer Portion
Get an MTO appraisal from Southex
Get the Safety Check completed if it was not done by the seller.
Go to the MTO and transfer ownership to you.
Make sure you have:
The signed Transfer Portion of the ownership,
The safety check
The appraisal
